Suffolk is a largely rural county but is also well known as the home of British horseracing at Newmarket and for the busy international Port of Felixstowe. Suffolk has a growing concentration of high-tech industries in and around Ipswich and Martlesham.
Suffolk is home to a population of 675,000 with the major county towns of Bury St Edmunds, Ipswich, Lowestoft and Newmarket. Suffolk offers its inhabitants a combination of rural tranquillity and lively towns which has contributed to Suffolk's enviable reputation for 'quality of life'.
Tourist attractions in Suffolk include: rural market towns of Bungay, Lavenham and Woodbridge, the historic seaside centre of Aldeburgh and 45 miles of largely unspoilt coastline.
Newmarket - horseracing capital of the world and the RSPB Minsmere bird reserve.
The Ipswich to Cambridge corridor
Suffolk is successfully developing its Ipswich to Cambridge high-tech corridor to attract technology companies into the region. Clustered around Ipswich are Btexact Technologies Research Facilities at Adastral park and Brightstar, BT's own incubator, producing spin-out companies which turn cutting-edge technology into commercial ventures.
Three leading-edge postgraduate research institutes: University College London (UCL), CMI, Chimera (University of Essex) have set up base at Adastral Park.
Suffolk's leading businesses
Elsewhere in Suffolk, Genzyme, one of the world's top five biotech companies, has made substantial investments totalling £55 million in its Haverhill site. Other major companies with a significant presence in Suffolk include:
