Norfolk takes in the top corner of the East of England and boasts miles of unspoilt coastlines and numerous rural market towns. The cathedral city of Norwich combines the historic traditions of Norfolk with modern-day living, innovation and enterprise. An international airport, excellent shopping and a growing reputation
in creative and innovative industries identify Norwich as a vibrant place to
live and work.
Norfolk has a population of 792,000 with major towns of Norwich, Diss, Downham Market, Great Yarmouth, King's Lynn and Thetford located in the county. The traditional view of Norfolk as a largely rural county is complimented by the buzz of larger towns and innovative industries, where medieval architecture sits side-by-side with cutting-edge contemporary design such as the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts at the University of East Anglia.
Tourist attractions in Norfolk include: the Norfolk Broads, Norwich castle, the
seaside resorts of Cromer, Hunstanton, Sheringham and Great Yarmouth and the royal estate at Sandringham.
Norfolk is home to the Norwich Research Park, Europe's largest concentration of research activity in food and health. The park is a hive of activity for independent research and Syngenta in collaboration with Du Pont has made substantial investments of £75 million to fund a new laboratory.
The John Innes Centre, also at the Norwich Research Park, is an international plant and microbial science institute dedicated to research benefiting fundamental scientific knowledge, agriculture, horticulture and biotechnology worldwide. And the Sainsbury Laboratory has rapidly established a global reputation in the field of molecular plant pathology and genetics.
multi-media in Norfolk
Norfolk is also seeing a rapidly developing cluster of innovative multi-media organisations alongside one of the world's largest software companies, Adobe, which has located its European systems engineering division in Norwich.
oil, gas and renewable energy
The energy sector in Norfolk, and indeed the East of England, is developing at a rapid pace. Although North Sea oil and gas have been the cornerstone of the economy in Norfolk, offshore energy is now a key industry with Norfolk leading the way in this important area. Powergen Renewables Offshore Wind is working with regional partners on the UK's first major offshore wind farm near Great Yarmouth.
