the counties

Running along the region's borders with London, the county of Essex has the highest population in the East of England and is England's largest county.
Essex also covers the unitary authority areas of Southend-on-Sea and Thurrock.
Essex offers a diverse choice of lifestyles for its 1.6 million inhabitants - from the buzz of the busy towns to the relative calm of scenic villages and seaside towns. Essex is home to London Stansted airport - one of Europe's fastest growing airports - the M25 motorway is only minutes away and London just half an hour by train, giving easy access to the rest of the UK and Europe.
Tourist attractions in Essex include: the county town of Chelmsford and seaside resorts of Clacton, Walton, Frinton and Southend-on-Sea and the Lakeside shopping centre in Thurrock.
The Thames Gateway Partnership
The Thames Gateway Partnership is a major regeneration initiative linking London, the South East and Europe. Thames Gateway is set to become a centre of excellence for manufacturing, research and development, an international transport interchange and a prime location for business and financial services. Within the East of England, the Thames Gateway South Essex Partnership is driving forward initiatives for the area's future.
Leading-edge research and innovation in Essex
The University of Essex is leading Europe in research in optoelectronics and photonics. In association with Nortel in Harlow where optoelectronics was first identified as a viable new technology, there are more than 1500 researchers working in this field.
Pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline has also invested research resources in Harlow at their state-of-the-art New Frontiers Research Centre.
The automotive sector has many international players established in Essex. Ford's Dunton Technical Centre, just outside Basildon, is the largest automotive design and engineering facility in the UK and one of the most advances facilities of its kind in Europe. It is home to over 5,000 engineers, designers and support staff who are responsible for the design and development of the Ford Ka, Fiesta, Focus and Mondeo and other commercial vehicles worldwide.
Visteon, the world's second largest automotive component manufacturer, has recently chosen a 14-acre sit in Basildon for its new headquarter building.
